We are HALE, Oregon State University's High Altitude Liquid Engine team, developing Oregon’s first collegiate liquid rocket engine. As one of six finalists in the Base 11 Space Challenge, we are working toward launching a single-stage liquid bipropellant rocket into space. The first collegiate team to achieve this goal will win a $1 million prize.
HALE is a multi-year program that designs, manufactures, and tests our liquid rocket engines on campus. Mira 1, our first engine, was a 2,000 lbf pressure-fed kerosene and liquid oxygen engine designed for foundational learning. Mira 2, our latest engine, builds on the lessons learned from Mira 1 with a much lighter more efficient design focused on manufacturability and thermal longevity.
On December 16th, the HALE team successfully conducted a static fire test of Mira 2, the most powerful liquid-fueled rocket engine built in Oregon. This summer, we plan to launch CETUS, a bipropellant kerosene-liquid oxygen rocket powered by Mira 2.
HALE consists of subteams in propulsion, avionics, vertical test stand, structures, aerodynamics and recovery, and fluids.
We meet on Mondays at 6 PM in Owen 102. For more information, join our discord here.
